Accessibility statement – Be Your Best website
This website is run by Active Surrey, the Active Partnership for Surrey who are funded to operate the Tier 2 weight management programme (Be Your Best) for families with young children in Surrey.
We aim to provide an accessible website that is easy to use by everyone, whatever their level of ability/disability or access device (although please note your browser version could affect some functionality).
For example, that means you should be able to:
- change colours, contrast levels and fonts
- zoom in without the text spilling off the screen
- navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
- navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
We aim to reach the level "AA" of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). These are the international standard for accessible websites and content.
How accessible is this website?
We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible and these include:
- a few legacy PDF documents may not be fully accessible to screen readers
- embedded videos from other sources may not always have captions
We continually review the site and will publish further issues when they are identified or work to rectify them.
We want to make our information available to as many people as possible while creating a website that is attractive and interesting to use. Our aim is always to support recent (non-beta) versions of the most popular browsers. We should not provide any services which rely solely on a particular browser.
Reporting accessibility problems with this website
Whilst this website has been designed to comply with international accessibility guidelines, there may be some elements that do not conform to all the guidelines. If you have any problems accessing our website or part of it, then please contact active.surrey@surreycc.gov.uk
Enforcement procedure
The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the 'accessibility regulations'). If you're not happy with how we respond to points that you may raise, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).
Technical information about this website's accessibility
Active Surrey is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.
Non accessible content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.
Non compliance with the accessibility regulations
- Some video captions are auto-generated and are not always 100% accurate.
This fails WCAG 2.1 level A success criterion 1.2.2 (captions (prerecorded)).
The size of our organisation and the time needed to manually transcribe audio tracks represent a disproportionate burden on our ability to guarantee 100% accuracy on every video which may be featured on the site (particularly for any created by third party partners).
We rely on auto-generated subtitling but will make efforts to check and rectify our own videos when any subtitling issues are identified, within 4 weeks of upload. If you notice a subtitling issue that hampers your understanding, please contact us at beyourbest@surreycc.gov.uk with the subject title ‘Subtitling on BYB website video’.
Content that's not within the scope of the accessibility regulations
Older PDFs and other documents
Many of our older PDFs and Word documents do not meet accessibility standards - for example, they may not be structured so they're accessible to a screen reader. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (name, role value).
Some of our PDFs and Word documents are essential to providing our services. For example, we have PDFs with information on how users can access certain services, and forms published as Word documents or Excel sheets. We will always aim to design new documents to ensure accessibility (or provide plain text alternatives for widely used documents) but should you encounter any problems with any particular document or need it in a more accessible format please email beyourbest@surreycc.gov.uk
How we tested this website
Our website developer, Purple Creative Studio, designed the site to meet WCAG 2.1 guidelines. We also use the SiteImprove Accessibility Checker for automated testing of the website to identify any issues.
